Nalanda: Seven Wonders
Nalanda
Nalanda was one of the
first ever residential universities from 5th Century A.D. to 12th
Century A.D. for higher learning in Bihar, India. The total area covered in
Nalanda is 14 hectares and it had the capability to accommodate around 10000
students and around 3000 teachers. There are several temples and meditation
points and library too in Nalanda. Nalanda was built by Gupta rulers who were
followers of Buddha. The Gupta dynasty flourished till the end of 12th
century when a Persian ruler invaded the kingdom. He burnt the library and even
burnt thousands of monks alive and beheaded the left ones as he was adamant to
uproot the Buddhism. Though the library was again rebuilt shortly after this,
it was again destroyed later.
Now most of the structures
of Nalanda are left as ruins but it is still a symbol of glorious history and
learning of Indian culture. Almost all subjects were taught in Nalanda,
providing the students a religious upbringing. There was a nice bonding between
the teachers and the students of Nalanda, and also the atmosphere was pleasant
and calm. Nalanda is one of the Seven Wonders of India.
