Dumbo octopus is a deep sea animal, living at the extreme depths of around 3500 meters. Some of them are even found at 7000 meters of depth which is the deepest for any type of octopus. It has got its name of Dumbo octopus from the ear like fins on the top of its body. Due to this shape, it looks like Walt Disney’s flying elephant Dumbo. They have a very low body density which is a must for deep sea creatures. They have a transparent skin and can remove their skin at wish. They move by pulsing of their arms, and by moving their fins. They use their motion for searching for food over the surface of ocean. Its eating habits are different from other octopus in a way that it swallows its whole food.

They don’t have a specific breeding season and females can lay eggs at any time. Male and females are different in sizes and sucker pattern. Male Dumbo octopus has an enlarged segment of the arm which is used as a penis to discharge sperms in females.
