Gerenuk: Strange Species
Gerenuk
The
name of this species of antelope has come from the Somalia language and it
means giraffe necked. This name has been given to it because of its physical
appearance, since it has a long neck. It is found in dry thorn bush scrub in
east Africa, Somalia, Eastern Ethiopia, North and West Kenya and Tanzania. It
is near threatened but not endangered.
They
have a strange appearance since they have small head in proportion to their long
neck and significantly large ears and eyes. Male gerenuks have thorns and have
more muscular necks as compared to females.
Due
to their long neck, they can easily reach the leaves on the trees. Since they
get enough water from leaves and bushes, they seldom drink water.
The
gestation period for gerenuk is 7 months and they are born one at a time. They
are near threatened species of antelope.
